MIAMI DESIGN DISTRICT PERFORMANCE SERIES RETURNS FOR FALL 2018
PRESENTED BY THE KNIGHT FOUNDATION & PRODUCED BY EMILIO ESTEFAN IN COLLABORATION WITH THE MIAMI SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
MIAMI, FL (September 2018) –The Miami Design District Performance Series returns on October 5th to the Palm Court with its weekly Friday evening ensemble of live musical performances produced by 19-time Grammy© Award winning producer Emilio Estefan in collaboration with the Miami Symphony Orchestra presented by the Knight Foundation. Voted MIAMI NEW TIMES’ Best Free Concert, the anticipated music series is the ideal way to kick-off each weekend and is FREE and open to the public.
The Performance Series gained notoriety after its start in 2017 for bringing performances out of the traditional theater setting and into the neighborhood. Open to the public every Friday beginning on Oct 5thand running through Dec 14th, the series comes back with highly-acclaimed performers and acts from all genres as well as the wildly popular Miami Symphony Orchestra (MISO) Pop-up concerts.
This season will feature stellar performances by Julian Marley & The Uprising,Bernadette Peters, Luis Enrique, Thelma Houston, Nestor Torres, Emily Estefan, El Michaand Taylor Dayneamong others. In addition to the Performance Series, MDD also features two museums, ‘YogArt, movie screenings at the ICA, lectures, Family Day and guided art tours to explore all of the public art exhibitions curated by some of the world’s leading contemporary artists that are all complementary to visitors.

October 5: Julian Marley & The Uprising
Julian Marley is the son of reggae legend Bob Marley. The Grammy Award Nominated roots-reggae musician, singer-songwriter, producer and humanitarian formed a reggae band called The Uprising, made up of young Jamaican musicians, which he now tours with.
October 12: Taylor Dayne
An American pop icon with a career spanning three decades, Taylor’s
groundbreaking debut single “Tell It to My Heart” turned her into an overnight international sensation. This year Taylor Dayne celebrates a 30-year career anniversary by embarking on a national tour.
October 19: Miami Symphony Orchestra
The Miami Symphony Orchestra (MISO), now in its historic 30th seasonis Miami’s hometown professional symphony and a valuable contributor to Miami’s cultural fabric. Led by MISO Music Director & Conductor Maestro Eduardo Marturet, it represents the exceptional talent and diversity that mirrors South Florida’s international and multicultural richness.
October 26: Grammy Award Winning “Prince of Salsa” Luis Enrique
Nicaraguan salsa vocalist Luis Enrique is one of Latin music’s first pioneers of the romantic “salsa sensual” style. Enrique’s sizable discography has earned him various Latin Grammy nominations, five Lo Nuestro Awards, a Grammy Award for ‘Best Tropical Latin Album,’ in addition to numerous gold and platinum records.
November 2: Latin Grammy Award-Winner Nestor Torres with The Frost School of Music Jazz Ensemble
Latin Grammy Award winning Nestor Torres’ rhythmic and mellifluous flute sound will be accompanied by the beloved Frost School of Music Jazz Ensemble. Throughout his illustrious career Nestor has won a Latin Grammy 4 Latin Grammy nominations, and one Grammy nomination, As a soloist he has collaborated with diverse artists such as Gloria Estefan, Kenny Loggins, Dave Mathews, Herbie Hancock, Tito Puente, which are a testament to his remarkable artistry.
November 9: Latin Urban Cubaton Star El Micha
Michael Fernando Sierra Miranda, known to the world as “El Micha,” is a prominent leader in the current Cubaton scene. Internationally recognized, he has collaborated with artists such as Gente de Zona, Chacal, Candyman, and Gue Pequeño. This year he’s exploding on to the mainstream Latin scene with a tsunami of hit singles and collaborations with artists such as Enrique Iglesias, Descemer Bueno, Wisin, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Pitbull, and Farruko.
November 16: Miami Symphony Orchestra featuring two-time Tony Award Winner Bernadette Peters
The Miami Symphony Orchestra (MISO), now in its historic 28th season, is Miami’s hometown professional symphony and a valuable contributor to Miami’s cultural fabric. Led by MISO Music Director & Conductor Maestro Eduardo Marturet, the performance will include a special performance by 2x Tony Award winner and American musical theater icon Bernadette Peters.
November 23: A Tribute to the Legends of the Miami Sound: Frankie Marcos & Clouds w/ Special Guest Carlos Oliva
Pioneers in the world recognized ” Sound of Miami “, Frankie Marcos & Clouds provided impressive horn arrangements and Latin mambos to this musical movement of hot Latin rhythms and jazzy-rocky musical progressions. Time Magazine credits Carlos Oliva as the leader of “The Miami Sound,” a fusion of Cuban music, salsa, afro beats, samba, jazz and rock. Together, they’ll spread joy with a unique and memorable performance.
November 30: A Motown Salute with Disco & R&B Grammy Winning Legend Thelma Houston
Join legendary GRAMMY-winning disco, soul and R&B singer Thelma Houston on an amazing musical journey through her inspiring life story told in Motown hits. With more than 23 albums under her belt, the new band show features a non-stop parade of Motown music backed up by longtime friends and studio legends.
December 7: ART BASEL: Singer/Songwriter/Musician Emily Estefan
Emily Estefan is a drummer, guitarist, singer, songwriter, and daughter of Emilio Estefan and Gloria Estefan. Estefan produced and directed her own debut album Take Whatever You Want which landed on FOUR of the Billboard charts. Her smooth vocals and jazzy/R&B arrangements return for a third time to the MDD Performance stage.
December 14: Holiday Concert with the South Florida Youth Symphony & Special Guest Vocalists
Since 1964, The South Florida Youth Symphony faculty and board of trustees have developed one of the oldest and most respected classical music training organizations for young people in the US. The late founding Maestro, Mr. Carmen Nappo, former conductor of the Miami Ballet, the Miami Metropolitan Symphony and the Founder/conductor of “Holiday on Ice”, started the South Florida Youth Symphony with the vision of offering teenage musicians the chance to learn and perform the great masters of the musical world. Today 51 years later, the tradition grows and abounds under the fine direction of Maestro Nappo’s step daughter, Marjorie Gould Hahn, a board member of the League of American Orchestras National Youth Division.
